چکیده

It has been suggested that cosmological γ-ray bursts (GRBs) can produce the observed flux and spectrum of cosmic rays at the highest energies. However, recent observations indicate that the redshift distribution of GRBs most likely follows that of the star formation rate in the universe, a rate which was much higher at redshifts 1.5-2 than it is today. Thus, most GRBs are at high redshifts. As a consequence, any cosmic rays emitted by these GRBs at energies above ∼ 2− 3× 10 eV would be strongly attenuated by interactions with the 3 K background radiation. If one assumes rough equality between the energy released by GRBs in ∼ 10 to ∼ 1 MeV photons and that released in 10 eV cosmic rays, then less than 10% of the cosmic rays observed above 10 eV can be accounted for by GRBs.

Gamma Ray Bursts Cannot Produce the Observed Cosmic Rays

Using recent results indicating that the redshift distribution of γ-ray bursts most likely follows the redshift evolution of the star formation rate, I show that the energy input from these bursts at low redshifts is insufficient to account for the observed flux of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays with energies above 10 20 eV.

Cosmological gamma-ray bursts and the highest energy cosmic rays.

We discuss a scenario in which the highest energy cosmic rays (CR's) and cosmological-ray bursts (GRB's) have a common origin. This scenario is consistent with the observed CR ux above 10 20 eV, provided that each burst produces similar energies in-rays and in CR's above 10 20 eV. Protons may be accelerated by Fermi's mechanism to energies 10 20 eV in a dissipative, ultra-relativistic wind, wit...

On the Spectrum of Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays and the Gamma Ray Burst Origin Hypothesis

It has been suggested that cosmological γ-ray bursts (GRBs) can produce the observed flux of cosmic rays at the highest energies. However, recent studies of γ-ray bursts indicate that their redshift distribution likely follows the average star formation rate of the universe and that GRBs were more numerous at high redshifts. As a consequence, we show that photomeson production energy losses suf...
